THE TRAIL OF THE TIRED STONES
DURATION: 2 DAYS AND 1 NIGHT
Off the typical tourist track, this trip focuses on uncovering the mysteries of Incan construction and in particular, the transportation of the “tired stones”. The tired stones are giant blocks of granite which never made it to the great fort due to the Spanish arrival to the Incan world but were transported from the heights of the Sacred Valley’s western slopes- the Cachiccata quarries located at around 6.5km from the citadel- to its high eastern slope. This trip also focuses on the Andean’s integral understanding of the world, in which matter and spirit are harmoniously intertwined. This is reflected in the topography of the valley. We will try to understand why the citadel of Ollantaytambo was constructed on its specific site, not elsewhere, and from the observatory of “the crying sacred one” (the snowy peak of Veronica, as it is known in Spanish), we can make out the pyramid of Paqaritampu.
